If I then need to restore the entire folder, what do you think Backup Exec will restore? The expectation is that it would restore 2 files. Then I rename 1 of the files and run an incremental backup. Let's say I use BE to back up a folder containing 2 files. Out of the box, Backup Exec cannot do true incremental backups at all. Recently, I upgraded one of our installations from 2012 R3 to 15 and was disappointed to find the same shortcomings were present. Of particular challenge was backing up the file servers because of what appears to be really bad design and product management decisions involving incremental backups. I have gained much experience using it to back up physical servers. Years ago, I inherited a Backup Exec 2010 installation. I did not test the performance issue as there is no point with pricing like this. Backup Exec will catalog the particular tape only.I tested out Backup Exec 16 and it still requires purchase of the Enterprise Server Option (ESO) to get true incremental support with agent-based backups. If a particular backup job spanned more than one tape, clearing this option also allows you to catalog one of the tapes independently without requiring the other tapes. The catalog procedure may take as long or longer than the time it took to record the backup job operation. When running a catalog operation with this check box not selected, it is normal that the procedure will take a long time to complete.
Having the option cleared is very useful when cataloging media written by other backup software applications, such as ArcServe. If the check box is not selected during a catalog operation, all files on the tape must be read file-by-file to create a new catalog. This option reduces the size of the catalogs considerably.Īfter the catalogs have been truncated, the files and directories cannot be restored unless the media is recataloged. This allows the catalog operation to complete much faster as it is not reading each file on the media to build a new catalog. When the " Use storage media-based catalogs" check box is selected, Backup Exec is able to read the catalog information that is on the media. Rebuild catalogs when Catalog operation fails in Backup Exec Explanation of 'Use storage media-based catalogs' (Fast Cataloging) option: Right click on the tape/s that is having problems, select " Associate with Media Set" and send it to " Retired Media" media set. In case the problem is based in backup to tape jobs, following steps to delete the media from Backup Exec and re-run the catalogs operation on the media is suggested: This issue could be due to a number of problems: Corrupt catalogs in the Catalogs folder, catalogs on disk/tapes overwritten, catalogs truncated, bad tape, one piece of media not currently identified in Backup Exec database, unable to catalog overwritten media which is transferred from another Media Server even after the inventory was performed, etc. "An error occurred while retrieving catalog information". Backup Exec must catalog this backup set using a file-by-file cataloging method.”
